Herbs used outside of cooking
Herbs have many uses outside of cooking.
There’s so much more you can do with aromatic herbs such as soothing herbal teas, scent bags for the bath, wardrobe or airing cupboard, treatment for the hair, slumber cushions and incense. Check out our top tips!
Footbath
It is said that the sage in the foot bath can stimulate blood circulation, combat fungus and prevent sweaty feet.
Incense
Use herbs as incense to clear the air. Take herbs that contain antiseptic oils such as sage, rosemary, thyme and oregano. Add the herbs in a censer and burn off. The air in the room becomes cleaner and the delightful aromas have an effect on your senses.
Conditioner for your hair
Make your own conditioner with rosemary, to refresh dull hair. Boil 1 tablespoon rosemary with 1 liter of water (preferably rainwater) until the aroma is intense. Let it cool. Strain and pour into the bottle. Rinse thoroughly.
Steaming
In asthma, nasal congestion or inflammation of the sinuses, it is liberating to inhale steam with thyme. Add 1 tablespoon of thyme in a bowl with 1-2 liters of boiling water. Cover your head with a towel and hold it over the bowl as long as possible.
Herbal tea
Make your own herbal tea! Add 1-2 teaspoons of dried herb such as mint, thyme or sage in a teacup. Pour in boiling water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes. Strain and add 1 teaspoon of honey if you like. Enjoy the natural aromas from the tea and feel the beneficial effects.
